A map of the world at your fingertips seemed impossible only a few short years ago. Today it is nothing unusual. In the same way, it has become common for people to be able to use a cell phone GPS navigation systems to find directions to anyway. Just as amazing is the fact that the GPS in cell phones provides the direction for police and emergency workers to find you in an emergency situations or even to locate a missing person. More and more people are utilizing this development.

So, how does it work? GPS works by sending out signals that are picked up by GPS receivers. The Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) analyzes the signal and relays the information on to the user. Although originally designed for government use, the ability of GPS to determine the position, speed, and direction of a cell phone has brought the popularity of cell phone GPS into the lives of ordinary citizens.

Many people wonder how we tracked cell phones before GPS. This was done using a method called triangulation. This works by determining which three cell phone towers to which the phone is closest. We can then determine the approximate location of the cell phone. Now that cell phone GPS is available, though, we choose to use it instead of triangulation due to its accuracy. Cell phone GPS can pinpoint the location of a cell phone within about five meters, which is up to ten times the accuracy given to us by triangulation.

To follow FCC regulations, each cell phone that has GPS capabilities must, whenever a 911 call is made, send out a GPS signal to the 911 operator, letting them know from where the call is being made. This helps police and other rescue personnel find people when they need medical or police attention. In addition to 911 calls, cell phone GPS has often been used in finding the location of missing people. For these reasons, cell phone GPS has become increasingly popular in not only the lives of individuals, but in the professional world as well.

The compact size of cell phones allows cell phone navigation systems, like the VZ Navigator by Verizon Wireless. This system and other systems like it have become very popular become they let the user access various maps. When the to and from locations are submitted to the phone, it will show step-by-step directions. It’s amazing what a small, but advanced tool this cell phone GPS offers to today’s fast paced, technological world.

There has been a major growth in the GPS cell phone technology over the past few years. The helpful and convenient features that used to be used only by the government but can now be utilized by ordinary people in their everyday life. The small size, great accuracy and easy mobility has made the GPS cell phone increasingly popular and we will most probably continue to see growth in its features and usability continually each year.
