What Exactly Is Spyware?

by James Beckett

Spyware is a sly information grabbing program that is downloaded onto a user’s computer, usually in an underhanded manner. Some Spyware just shows useless notices on your computer, while other programs are significantly more malicious. Let’s take a closer look at what Spyware is precisely.

Spyware is most notorious for installing onto your system without your knowledge, usually under the guise of something useful or piggybacked onto something else you are installing. The worst part is that there are companies out there who pay for you to get people to install it on their computers, so companies will actually bundle it with the free software they give you!

Sometimes correcting the Spyware problem is not as easy as deleting the software or installing an anti-virus program. There is a Spyware program named the Dotcomtoolbar that installs itself to a PC system and then won’t budge. You can’t get rid of it by just uninstalling; it will still be attached to your system. Most well known programs aren’t equipped to destroy it either. You are required to get specialized software, or follow a long process to get rid of this Spyware forever.

The initial wave of this software started because market research companies wanted to know what people were up to online. Of course now that has been twisted. You can get software that allows you to track every key pressed on a keyword, imagine that combined with the ability to track everywhere you go, every file you open, all your details will be exposed…

Pop up ads are likely the most bothersome aspect of being infected. The notices can pop up on the exterior of a web browser, or source from the webpage. Third party advertisers hire these programmers to exhibit their notices to a specific group.

Along with monitoring your online activity, Spyware can also collect personal facts about you. That means if you go to your banking website each morning, it can at times watch that action. However, most popular websites have several layers of safety in place to avoid the opportunity of a thief stealing your personal data.

People online can make money by directing you to sites of interest, which then pay the person who sent you there by tracking the process using cookies (all legit). Now these scammers can replace the cookies with their own (highly illegal) so that honest hard-working people online are cheated out of their money.

The problem with spyware is that it is installed without our knowledge, who reads a 15 page disclaimer for a free piece of software you just downloaded? (even though you should read every word) Not many people, so if they hide a sentence halfway down about installing this spyware on your computer you don’t stand a chance of finding it! I have software I willing installed on my computer that lets the company know what I go to online, but I know about that and trust them, anything else is criminal, scan your computer now and find out if you are infected.
